"Long before I became a lawyer, I was an entrepreneur."

My Story

Long before I became a lawyer, I was an entrepreneur. I remember what it felt like to hire lawyers before I became one. As a business owner, I learned that when you’re hiring a professional, the matter in front of you isn’t just another file. It represents your business, your family, your investment, your future, and sometimes one of the biggest decisions you’ll ever make.

Those experiences stayed with me.

When I became a lawyer, I knew exactly the kind of lawyer I wanted to be, and I knew that it wasn’t enough that clients to feel satisfied, that’s the bare minimum a service provider should give their clients, I want them to be delighted.

I wanted to give clients the comfort that I am responsive, practical, and genuinely invested in their success. I wanted them to feel informed, supported, and confident throughout every step of the legal process.

As my career evolved, I realized I wasn’t looking to build my own law firm. I was looking to build a law firm that reflected my values. A place where exceptional legal work was matched by exceptional client service, where relationships mattered, and where people genuinely enjoyed working together.

That vision became Brooks Business Law, and our commitment to redefining the law firm experience.

An Entrepreneurial Perspective

I’ve always been fascinated by entrepreneurship.

Before attending law school, I operated several business ventures and spent nearly eight years living in South Korea. Building businesses, living overseas, and experiencing different cultures gave me perspectives that continue to shape the way I practise today.

Because of that background, I naturally connect with entrepreneurs. I understand the excitement of building something from the ground up, the uncertainty that comes with growth, and the weight of making decisions that affect your business, your employees, your family, and your future.

That’s why I don’t see my role as simply providing legal advice. I see myself as part of my clients’ team, helping them navigate opportunities, manage risk, and make confident business decisions.

Over the past sixteen years, I’ve had the privilege of helping entrepreneurs launch businesses, acquire companies, purchase commercial real estate, secure financing, reorganize for growth, attract investment, and ultimately transition successful businesses to the next generation.

Some of those matters have involved complex, high-value transactions. Others have been smaller, but no less important. Every file matters because every client matters.

Helping build stronger businesses and stronger communities

Additionally, a significant part of my practice is devoted to working with First Nations and Indigenous organizations.

I have the privilege of advising First Nations, Indigenous organizations, entrepreneurs, and economic development corporations on corporate and commercial matters, commercial real estate, financing, designated land leasing, additions to reserve, governance, and economic development initiatives that create lasting opportunities for Indigenous communities.

Helping communities build sustainable businesses and long-term prosperity is very meaningful work I have the honour to do.

Building Brooks Business Law

When I founded Brooks Business Law, I wasn’t trying to create just ‘another’ law firm, or to merely redefine legal services on paper only. I wanted to create an experience that people didn’t know could exist in professional services. One where every interaction, every relationship, and every detail reflected the same commitment to quality, care, and respect. My hope has always been that our clients, our team, our suppliers and contractors, and everyone who works with us leaves thinking, “I didn’t know working with a law firm could feel like this.”

I wanted our clients to feel informed, respected, and genuinely cared for. I wanted them to look back on working with us and remember not only the quality of the legal advice they received, but how they were treated throughout the process.

I wanted our lawyers and staff members to experience something just as meaningful. A workplace where people are trusted, supported, challenged, and encouraged to build exceptional careers while also being present for their families, their health, and the things that matter most outside the office. I’m incredibly proud that many members of our team have told me they’ve never experienced a workplace quite like Brooks Business Law, and that the support they receive extends beyond them to their families as well.

That philosophy extends to every relationship we build. Whether someone is a client, referral partner, accountant, lender, supplier, contractor, or opposing counsel, I want working with Brooks Business Law to be defined by professionalism, responsiveness, respect, and collaboration.

For me, success isn’t measured solely by the work we deliver. It’s measured by how people feel after working with us. If clients, colleagues, and everyone else who interacts with our firm leave thinking, “I didn’t know working with a law firm could feel like this,” then we’ve accomplished exactly what we set out to build.

How I Help Clients

My practice focuses on helping businesses, entrepreneurs, investors, First Nations, and Indigenous organizations through many of the most important decisions they’ll ever make.

This includes:

  • Business acquisitions and sales
  • Real estate transactions
  • Indigenous economic development
  • Corporate structuring and reorganizations
  • Commercial real estate
  • Commercial leasing
  • Secured financing
  • Shareholder agreements
  • Corporate governance
  • Designated land leasing
  • Additions to Reserve
  • Strategic business advice

Throughout my career, I’ve had the privilege of advising clients on several major transactions involving hotel construction financing, renewable energy projects, gaming investments, commercial real estate developments, financing arrangements, corporate reorganizations, and business succession planning, while also helping countless entrepreneurs build companies from the ground up.

Beyond the Office

Outside the office, you’ll often find me coaching baseball, training at CrossFit, skiing, playing hockey, travelling, or planning the next adventure with my family.

For the past 8 years, I’ve coached youth baseball including in the Nova Scotia Bluenose League, High School as well as the 16U Women’s Nova Scotia Provincial Team at the National Championships. Coaching has reinforced many of the same values that guide my professional life: preparation, accountability, teamwork, resilience, and helping people realize they’re capable of far more than they imagined.

Why I Love What I Do

The greatest reward in my career isn’t simply completing a transaction. It’s earning the trust of our clients, our team, and the people we have the privilege of working with every day.

It’s the entrepreneur who calls years after their incorporation because they’re ready to buy another business.

It’s the family who returns generation after generation, knowing they’ll always have someone they can trust.

It’s the First Nation that entrusts us with projects and advice that will help create opportunities for the next seven generations.

It’s the team member who trusts that Brooks Business Law is a place where they can build a meaningful career, continue growing professionally, and be genuinely supported, both at work and at home.

It’s the colleague who chooses to build their future with us because they believe in our culture, our values, and the way we care for one another.

It’s the supplier, consultant, or referral partner who enjoys working with us because they know they’ll be treated with respect, fairness, and appreciation.

If, years from now, people look back and say that Brooks Business Law made them feel respected, valued, genuinely cared for, and helped them accomplish more than they thought possible, I’ll know we’ve achieved exactly what we set out to build.
